Bolesławiec artistic community – Barbara Bednarowicz

I would like [my art] to be a language of communication, it seems to me that works should tell stories.
Barbara Bednarowicz
"'Conversations about Art", a film portrait of the artist prepared by Jacek Chlastawa.

This post from the series “Bolesławiec artistic community” was prepared within the framework of the project “Bolesławiec – 30 years of local government” carried out by the Museum of Ceramics and the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre – International Ceramics Centre.

Barbara Bednarowicz is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 2012, she received her diploma with honours from the Faculty of Sculpture in the atelier of Professor Adam Myjak. Between 2013 and 2017, she worked as a teacher of art subjects in several schools in Bolesławiec. In 2014-2018, she taught art classes at the S. Wyspiański Youth Cultural Centre in Bolesławiec. Currently, she is an employee of the Museum of Ceramics in Bolesławiec.

She is inspired by the human being and everything that defines him… the contradiction of the image she creates for the external world, as well as the emotionality and complexity of the internal image. She creates sculptures, installations and objects, using mainly matter close to man such as earth, clay, concrete…

We invite you to watch a film in the series ” Conversations about Art” featuring the artist.

Bolesławiec artistic community – Krzysztof Brzuzan

Krzysztof Brzuzan was born and raised in Bolesławiec. He first came into contact with real art in primary school through Mieczysław Żołądź, a pupil of Antoni Kenar. When encouraged by the artist to make some sculpture, he brought the finished work, causing enthusiasm and disbelief. He continued his artistic education at the First Secondary School in Bolesławiec under the tutelage of Jolanta Ajlikow-Czarnecka. He passed the entrance exam for the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków on the first attempt thanks to a highly acclaimed set of works in wood. He obtained his diploma in the sculpture studio of Professor Marian Konieczny.

After graduation he moved to Rzeszów, where in 1980 he took up a job as an art teacher at the State Secondary School of Fine Arts. At first he taught metalwork and then, for many years, woodcarving (according to an original didactic programme). In 1980, he also won a competition for the reconstruction of a monument to Adam Mickiewicz in Rzeszów, which was important for his further artistic career. He has been an active participant in the cultural life of the city from the very beginning and has repeatedly won prizes in the local competition “Painting, Graphics, Drawing, Sculpture of the Year”. He is well known to the citizens of Rzeszów for his bronze sculptures located in the city space, including the statue of a juvenile delinquent aiming a slingshot at a street lamp.

In his works, he uses stone, wood, metal and ceramics, often combining these materials. Monumental and sacred sculpture occupies an important place in his work. In his art, he refers to many cultural tropes, from the great classics to folk artists. However, regardless of the form or material used, he always tries to say something about man and his condition in the contemporary world.

Bolesławiec artistic community – Mateusz Grobelny

... I continue with the technology of wood firing, but in very modern constructions, because the kiln construction itself becomes a sculpture. The process itself, the process of building the whole thing and then firing it, is sometimes more important than the end result.
Mateusz Grobelny
"On the tapis", Lusatia Television 2019

This post from the series “Boleslawiec artistic community” was prepared within the framework of the project “Boleslawiec – 30 years of local government” implemented by the Museum of Ceramics and the Boleslawiec Cultural Center – International Ceramics Center

Mateusz Grobelny was born in 1980. In 2008, he graduated from the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, where he studied ceramic design under Professors Przemysław Lasak and Jan Drzewiecki. He is a ceramic artist, sculptor and specialises in creating unique ceramics fixed in wood-fired kilns. His studies have had a significant impact on his artistic sensibility, but in his everyday work he also finds use for two professions he acquired earlier: construction technician and clothing technician with a specialisation in designer-stylist.

Visitors to the Bolesławiec Ceramics Festival are particularly familiar with the spectacular, monumental outdoor kilns built on the square next to the Market Square, which take on a different form every year. The process of their creation brings to mind the design of both architecture and clothing, and requires great technical skill. It all starts with a sketch on paper, which takes a group of volunteers up to several weeks to bring to life. The first step is to build a hearth, over which a structure of welded steel rods is then erected. The skeleton is covered with silicon mats that allow light to pass through, providing an unusual visual experience during firing. Slightly different, but just as interesting, is the use of layered glass tiles in the walls of the kiln, which melt when heated. Some of the kilns are constructed in such a way that they can be opened during firing, turning the whole project into a kind of theatre, a fascinating performance that strongly captures the imagination of the audience. The ceramics fired in such kilns are always unpredictable and unique, as, irrespective of the authors’ knowledge and experience, chance plays a significant role in their creation.

On a daily basis, Mateusz Grobelny creates original, custom-made utility and decorative ceramics, including those turned on the potter’s wheel. He is also the author of three ceramic benches set up in the Bolesławiec Market Square. In his work he is inspired by femininity, nature and sometimes technological challenges. The joy of creation often turns into a struggle against the resistance of the matter. However, everything is rewarded by the awareness of creating a new reality, building something out of nothing.

The artist has won numerous prizes and solo exhibitions. Between 2010 and 2020, he ran his own ceramic-sculpture workshop at the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre – International Ceramics Centre. In 2013- 2019 he served as commissioner of the International Ceramic and Sculpture Plein-Air in Bolesławiec.

We invite you to watch footage of Mateusz Grobelny’s work:
