Bolesławiec artistic community – Mateusz Grobelny

... I continue with the technology of wood firing, but in very modern constructions, because the kiln construction itself becomes a sculpture. The process itself, the process of building the whole thing and then firing it, is sometimes more important than the end result.
Mateusz Grobelny
"On the tapis", Lusatia Television 2019

This post from the series “Boleslawiec artistic community” was prepared within the framework of the project “Boleslawiec – 30 years of local government” implemented by the Museum of Ceramics and the Boleslawiec Cultural Center – International Ceramics Center

Mateusz Grobelny was born in 1980. In 2008, he graduated from the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, where he studied ceramic design under Professors Przemysław Lasak and Jan Drzewiecki. He is a ceramic artist, sculptor and specialises in creating unique ceramics fixed in wood-fired kilns. His studies have had a significant impact on his artistic sensibility, but in his everyday work he also finds use for two professions he acquired earlier: construction technician and clothing technician with a specialisation in designer-stylist.

Visitors to the Bolesławiec Ceramics Festival are particularly familiar with the spectacular, monumental outdoor kilns built on the square next to the Market Square, which take on a different form every year. The process of their creation brings to mind the design of both architecture and clothing, and requires great technical skill. It all starts with a sketch on paper, which takes a group of volunteers up to several weeks to bring to life. The first step is to build a hearth, over which a structure of welded steel rods is then erected. The skeleton is covered with silicon mats that allow light to pass through, providing an unusual visual experience during firing. Slightly different, but just as interesting, is the use of layered glass tiles in the walls of the kiln, which melt when heated. Some of the kilns are constructed in such a way that they can be opened during firing, turning the whole project into a kind of theatre, a fascinating performance that strongly captures the imagination of the audience. The ceramics fired in such kilns are always unpredictable and unique, as, irrespective of the authors’ knowledge and experience, chance plays a significant role in their creation.

On a daily basis, Mateusz Grobelny creates original, custom-made utility and decorative ceramics, including those turned on the potter’s wheel. He is also the author of three ceramic benches set up in the Bolesławiec Market Square. In his work he is inspired by femininity, nature and sometimes technological challenges. The joy of creation often turns into a struggle against the resistance of the matter. However, everything is rewarded by the awareness of creating a new reality, building something out of nothing.

The artist has won numerous prizes and solo exhibitions. Between 2010 and 2020, he ran his own ceramic-sculpture workshop at the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre – International Ceramics Centre. In 2013- 2019 he served as commissioner of the International Ceramic and Sculpture Plein-Air in Bolesławiec.

We invite you to watch footage of Mateusz Grobelny’s work:

Bolesławiec artistic community – Mieczysław Kozłowski (1949-2015)

[Beauty] is something ambiguous, escaping definition. It is changeable and dependent on fashion and mood. But for me, beauty is timeless and subconscious (...)." - Mieczysław Kozłowski,
Mieczysław Kozłowski
Delight in nature - a conversation with Mieczysław Kozłowski, Katarzyna Żak, "RocznikBolesławiecki 2009

This post from the series “Boleslawiec artistic community” was prepared within the framework of the project “Boleslawiec – 30 years of local government” implemented by the Museum of Ceramics and the Boleslawiec Cultural Center – International Ceramics Center

Mieczysław Kozłowski was born in Poznań. He began his artistic education at the State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Poznań. In the years 1968-1973, he studied at the State Higher School of Visual Arts (currently the E. Geppert Academy of Fine Arts) in Wrocław, where he obtained a diploma in easel painting in the atelier of docent Alfons Mazurkiewicz and architectural painting in the atelier of Professor Mieczysław Zdanowicz. From 1974 to 1981 he worked as an art and photography instructor at the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre. From 1975 to 1981, he held the position of district visual artist. From 1981 to 1989 he was employed as a decoration designer at the “Bolesławiec” Ceramic Works.

He was a multi-talented artist. He was involved in painting, artistic and applied graphics, including computer graphics, as well as photography and ceramics. He created both large-scale oil paintings and pastels and small-scale watercolours, as well as tiles and other ceramic products. His favourite subject was landscape, in which he expressed his admiration for nature. He emphasised composition with rich colours. He used luminous colours, giving the impression of the painting’s surface rippling, and he was excellent at chiaroscuro.

In addition to this, he designed decorations and scenographies, as well as the visual setting for municipal celebrations. His oeuvre includes designs for the logo of the “Wiza” Artistic Ceramics Company, the trademark for artistic decorations for the “Bolesławiec” Ceramic Works, the logo of the Bolesławiec Refractory Works, the “Primus Inter Pares” medal for the now-defunct No. 8 Primary School in Bolesławiec, and the “Distinguished Service to the Bolesławiec Area” medal. Between 1979 and 1980, he realised six architectural mural paintings placed on the walls of buildings in the centre of Bolesławiec. He is also the author of the image of the national emblem and the city coat of arms located in the Council Chamber of the Bolesławiec Town Hall.

Mieczysław Kozłowski’s paintings and graphic works can be found in private collections in Poland, Germany, Austria, Belgium and the United States.

Bolesławiec artistic community – Stanisław Borowski, Paweł Borowski and Stanisław Jan Borowski

The subject of Stanisław Borowski's works are (...) the various aspects of our contemporary existence, and in particular those aspects of it in which our flaws, faults and ridiculousness are revealed. In his multi-coloured drawings, realism blends with fairy-tale, where unreal creatures, degenerate animals, satyrs, jellyfish and devils appear next to caricatured portraits. All this, flowing as if in passing from the master's unbridled imagination, (...) carries over into his epic works, creating unreal processions.
Prof. Małgorzata Dajewska
Laudation on the occasion of the awarding of the honoris causa doctorate to Stanisław Borowski at the E. Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław

This post from the series “Boleslawiec artistic community” was prepared within the framework of the project “Boleslawiec – 30 years of local government” implemented by the Museum of Ceramics and the Boleslawiec Cultural Center – International Ceramics Center

Stanisław Borowski is one of the world’s leading artists working in glass. His works appear in all major
international studies on artistic glass. Stanisław Borowski’s trademark are surreal, oneiric sculptures,
stylistically alluding to magical realism. The artist composes them from hand-formed elements, which he
covers with painterly visions by engraving them into a single or multi-coloured layer of glass surrounding
a colourless body. This extremely labour-intensive technique, which requires great patience and precision,
makes it possible to achieve intriguing spatial visual effects.

Stanisław Borowski has three sons who have taken over his love of artistic glass from him. Together with
them and his wife Ewa, he runs the family business Studio Borowski, which has been based in Tomaszów
Bolesławiecki since 1992. Paweł and Stanisław Jan have followed in their father’s footsteps and are
involved in the creation of both unique glass sculptures and highly popular, mass-produced decorative
objects. Wiktor, on the other hand, is responsible for marketing and promotion, while Ewa takes care of
administrative matters.

Stanisław Borowski was born in 1944 in Moûtiers (France), where his father, a miner, had emigrated in
search of work. After the war, in 1948, the Borowski family came to Bolesławiec. Here, Stanisław
Borowski attended primary school from 1953 to 1960. After the family moved to the village of
Nowosielce near Sanok, he graduated from a mechanical technical school and in 1965 was employed at
Krosno Glassworks. Working at making moulds, blowing and grinding glass, he gained versatile
experience.

In 1972, in secret from his family, he set up a workshop in his garage, where he attempted to create
original forms and experimented with various engraving methods. Between 1970 and 1974 he worked
with the State Higher School of Visual Arts in Wrocław. In 1975, he left his job at the glassworks and
began his independent artistic activity. His first international success came in 1980, when his work
entitled Portrait 1 was shortlisted for the second edition of the New Glass Review catalogue. This is a
prestigious compilation of the year’s 100 most interesting achievements in art glass published by the
Corning Museum of Glass (USA). As a result, he received an invitation to an international glass
exhibition in Kassel and a symposium of glass artists in Frauenau, Germany, which were to be held in
1982. When he found it difficult to obtain permission to leave (let us recall that Poland was under martial
law at the time), he decided not to return to the country. One of the artists he met at the symposium helped

him open his own atelier in Rheinbach near Bonn. After the Second World War, the town became a well-
known glass-making centre thanks to a large group of entrepreneurs and glass workers displaced from the

Sudety. Numerous exhibitions in Germany and other countries quickly brought Stanislaw Borowski
international recognition and fame. The real breakthrough came in 1985 with his first exhibition in the
USA. Interest from museums, galleries and collectors in his works proved to be high. To meet the
demand, the artist moved to Hennef, where he opened a new, larger studio. The next, and final, move took
place in 1992, when Studio Borowski began operating in adapted former farm buildings in Tomaszów
Bolesławiec.

Stanisław Borowski has been awarded the Bronze and Gold Medal “Meritorious to Culture Gloria Artis”
for his artistic achievements (2009 and 2014). In 2011, he received an honorary doctorate from the E.
Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław.

Paweł Borowski is the eldest son of Stanisław Borowski. He was born in 1969 in Krosno. He started creating in glass in 1989 in his father’s studio. Since 1990, he has functioned as an independent glass artist. As director of Studio Borowski, he is responsible for the development of the Art Objects, Studio Line and Outdoor Objects collections.

Stanisław Jan Borowski is the youngest son of Stanisław Borowski. He was born in 1981 in Krosno. He
began his adventure with artistic glass as a child in his father’s studio. In 2002, he graduated from the
Köln International School of Design and completed a conservation course at the Kurek Studio in Bad
Godesberg, Germany. In 2007 he obtained a diploma from the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences
(Hochschule Koblenz) at the Institute for Ceramics and Artistic Glass. He works and creates using almost
all glass techniques. The most important source of inspiration for him is nature. In the family business, he
creates colourful, unique pieces and artistic series for the Art Objects, Studio Line and Outdoor Objects
collections. As an independent artist, he also carries out numerous projects of his own.

The work of Stanisław Borowski and his sons is valued by collectors and buyers around the world. Their
works can be found in prestigious galleries, museums and private collections, including the Corning
Museum of Glass (USA), the Glasmuseum Frauenau, the Glasmuseum Rheinbach and the Badisches
Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe (Germany), the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the National Museum in
Wrocław and the Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Góra.

Bolesławiec artistic community – Stanisława Wojda-Pytlińska

Stanisława Wojda-Pytlińska was born in Klwaty near Radom. Her parents were not professionally involved in artistic activities, but they had a great passion for art. Her mother drew, her father made toys with his own hands, the house resounded with music and was full of creative invention. Under their influence, Stanisława decided to devote herself to art. First she studied painting at the teachers’ college in Legnica under Prof. Bronisław Chyła. Later she graduated from the State Higher School of Visual Arts (now the Academy of Fine Arts) in Gdansk, at the faculty of painting with a specialisation in plastic education in the atelier of Prof. Andrzej Dyakowski and Prof. Rajmund Pietkiewicz.

After her studies, she worked as a visual artist in the Voivodeship House of Culture in Radom, designing scenographies for monodramas and recitals presented in the Artistic Creation Hall, as well as poetry and music performances staged in the Powszechny Theatre in Radom. For many years in Bolesławiec, she ran art classes for children and young people at the St. Wyspianski Youth Cultural Centre and the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre – International Ceramics Centre.

Stanisława Wojda-Pytlińska practises painting, drawing and batik. She seeks inspiration for her works in music, poetry, literature and landscape. However, she avoids all literalism, leaving the viewer’s imagination wide open to interpretation. Her work is recognised by the artistic community, as evidenced by the fact that she has repeatedly been entrusted with the post of commissioner of plein-air painting workshops, including those in Kamień Pomorski, Trzebiatów, Karpacz and Przesieka.

This post from the series “Boleslawiec artistic community” was prepared within the framework of the project “Boleslawiec – 30 years of local government” implemented by the Museum of Ceramics and the Boleslawiec Cultural Center – International Ceramics Center

Bolesławiec artistic community – Wiesława Goryczka

I like change, moving forward and watching the world change, being free from labels, judgements and others' expectations of us. Life is a magical theatre, you can play different roles in it, but the best of them and probably the most difficult is to be yourself.
Wiesława Goryczka

This post from the series “Boleslawiec artistic community” was prepared within the framework of the project “Boleslawiec – 30 years of local government” implemented by the Museum of Ceramics and the Boleslawiec Cultural Center – International Ceramics Center

Wiesława Marianna Goryczka was born in Rzerzęczyce near Częstochowa. From 1978 to 1982 she studied at the State Higher School of Fine Arts (now the University of Arts) in Poznań at the Faculty of Visual Arts Education. She wrote her master’s thesis in art history (Baroque architecture of the palace in Parchów) under the supervision of Dr Jan Skuratowicz, and at her diploma exhibition she presented works in painting and drawing.

For many years she worked as a teacher, first in primary schools, then in secondary schools. In 1973-1983, at the Vocational School Complex in Bolesławiec, she taught drawing and performance techniques in classes with a ceramics decorator profile, vocational drawing at the catering school and clothing technical school, and advertising at a vocational secondary school. From 1983, she ran an art studio at the Youth Cultural Centre in Bolesławiec, at the same time teaching advertising at the Commercial and Service School Complex. Her charges have won numerous awards in international, national, provincial and municipal competitions. They represented our city at the world exhibition Expo 2000 in Hannover (6 prize-winning works in the calendar). In 1977, she received the third degree award from the Minister of Education and Upbringing. In 1988 she obtained the second degree of professional specialisation in teaching visual arts. In the same year she was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit for 20 years of teaching work. Since 2006, she has lived in Koszalin, from where she often travels to Australia for longer stays.

She has always been fascinated by travel, philosophy, art in its broadest sense, nature and people. She is infatuated with Taoism, which considers natural simplicity, effortless action, spontaneity and compassion to be the most important values, while observing and living in harmony with the laws of nature is seen as a way to learn a morality based on modesty, moderation and care.
